PDE Certification - PK-Grade 4 Teaching Certification
The PK-4 Teaching Certification is designed to provide students with the competencies to teach pre-kindergarten through grade 4. Students may elect to do an additional 12 credits to earn the M.Ed. in Elementary Education. Those who are able to secure a full-time or long-term substitute teaching position while pursuing their teaching certification may apply for the Pennsylvania intern certification program.
PK-Grade 4 Teaching Certification overview
The PK-Grade 4 Teaching Certification is designed for those with a bachelor’s degree in education or other field who would like to earn initial teacher certification to teach elementary students.
- 51-72 credits
- 12 additional credits to earn M.Ed. with certification

- 8-week courses with 1-week summer intensive courses
- 2.5- to 6-year completion

Students at Messiah University may also apply for the Pennsylvania intern certification program. This professional certificate entitles you to fill a full-time or long-term substitute teaching position in your content area while pursuing teaching certification.
To be eligible for the intern program, students must:
- Enroll in a Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) approved intern program.
- Secure a full-time or long-term substitute position in your content area(s).
- Meet all testing requirements.
