A minor in special education is best for those who want to work with individuals with disabilities across the lifespan in settings other than schools. No field experience is required and teacher certification is not earned. This minor can be paired with any major, but may be especially valuable to those preparing for careers in Occupational Therapy, health occupations, business, public policy, or the social sciences. As a student in the special education minor, you’ll take classes covering topics such as characteristics of disabilities, behavioral and academic interventions, and behavioral studies and others while enhancing your major with disability-related expertise.

Learning in the classroom is important but actually applying that knowledge in a hands-on way can make all the difference. At Messiah University, the Experiential Learning Initiative (ELI) allows Messiah to take this hands-on learning to a new level by giving students the opportunity to apply what they have learned to various real world contexts--such as an internship/practica, service learning, off-campus program, holding a student leadership position, or participating in undergraduate research.
